Choosing the Right Tire Size & Fitment
Picking the right tire starts with the size code stamped on your current sidewall. A marking like 275/55R20 117T tells you everything: 275 mm section width, 55% sidewall aspect ratio, R for radial construction, 20-inch wheel diameter, 117 load index, T speed rating. Match those specs — or step up intentionally — before adding tires to your cart.
Reading Tire Size Markings
Section width sets how wide the tire is bead to bead when mounted on a recommended wheel width. Aspect ratio decides sidewall height and, along with wheel diameter, overall rolling diameter — the number that determines speedometer accuracy and gearing. Load index (LI) matters for trucks and SUVs; jumping from an SL to an XL or LT tire without matching load rating can void factory warranties and hurt tow ratings. Speed rating (T, H, V, W, Y) governs sustained top speed and, indirectly, tread compound and steering response.
Matching Tires to Your Wheels
Every tire size has a range of acceptable wheel widths. Mounting a 295-section tire on a too-narrow 8-inch rim balloons the sidewall; slapping it on a 12-inch rim stretches it flat. Both hurt handling, wear, and warranty coverage.
