Lift Kit Wheel Fitment: Choosing Wheels and Tires After You Lift Your Truck
Once you lift your truck, wheel and tire selection is driven by three numbers: your lift height, your wheel offset, and your tire's overall diameter. As a rule of thumb: 2–3" of lift clears 33s on most half-tons, 3–4" clears 35s, and 6"+ is typically needed for 37s — but offset and backspacing decide whether they actually fit without rubbing.
A lift kit gets you the vertical clearance for bigger tires, but the tires still have to fit inside the fender well through full steering lock and full suspension travel. That's an offset and backspacing problem, not a lift-height problem. Get either one wrong and you'll rub — at full lock, on articulation, or when the fender liner compresses.

Offset and Backspacing for Lifted Trucks
Most lifted-truck buyers want an aggressive stance, which means lower (or negative) offset. Common offset ranges by truck platform:

Every step down in offset pushes the tire outward the same number of millimeters. Trucks with tall sidewalls will tolerate this better than SUVs on lower-profile tires — the sidewall flexes at full lock rather than binding against the frame.
Tire Width vs Wheel Width
Match tire width to wheel width. A 35x12.5 mud terrain wants a 17x8.5 to 17x10 wheel; going wider than 10" starts to stretch the tire and hurts sidewall protection on trails. Metric sizes like 315/70R17 fit a similar 8.5" to 10" wheel range. Load-range E tires are the standard for half-tons and larger — they take higher pressures and resist punctures better than passenger-rated equivalents.
Where Lifted Trucks Actually Rub
- Inside of fender at full lock: The most common contact point. Trimming the fender liner usually solves it.
- Front sway bar end links: Low-offset wheels swing the inner tire edge into end links on some IFS trucks.
- Rear frame rails: Wide tires on aggressive backspacing can hit inner frame rails on compression.
- Fender lip at full compression: Even with a lift, bumps can bring the top of the tire into the fender. Confirm with a fully-loaded, aired-up test.
Re-Gearing for Bigger Tires
Every 1" of overall diameter increase drops your effective gear ratio a bit and makes the truck feel sluggish, especially on downshifts and grades. As a general rule, 33s on stock gears is fine, 35s starts to feel lazy on stock 3.55s or lower numerically, and 37s almost always benefit from a re-gear to 4.10s or 4.56s depending on axle and transmission.
Beadlocks and Off-Road-Specific Wheels
Beadlock-capable wheels use a bolted outer ring to clamp the tire bead in place, letting you air down to single-digit PSI for rocks and sand without rolling the tire off. True beadlocks aren't DOT-legal in most states, but simulated beadlocks (styled but not functional) are — a common compromise for street-driven overland builds.
